At first synchronized swimming was called “water ballet” and debuted in the 1984 Los Angeles Games. The aim of for the swimmers is to look effortless while swimming synchronized in all movements with strength, endurance, flexibility and control their breath all with a smile.
With a mixture of dance, acrobatic movement and swimming they perform beautiful routines that get more intricate every Olympics competition. One requirement that must be kept is not to touch the bottom of the pool at any point. There are team and duet competitions and they include a free routine and a technical one, the score of both are combined to determine the final rankings. In order for the swimmers to keep count and perfect timing at all times, special underwater speakers are used.
As far as the scoring for the team routines it is very important for the technical routine to be executed precisely within a time frame of 2.50 min. Within the routine nine elements must be done at any given point and the music can be of their choice. The score is 50 percent of their total ranking score. For the free routine is less restrictive and longer, the timing can be up to four minutes and anything can be done with whatever music they desire. The remaining 50 percent of the score can be achieved.
For the duet there is a preliminary round in the first phase and the technical routine requires eight elements done in a time limit of 2.20 min. The music is up to them and the score can be up to 50 percent. If they pass to the second round that score is 50 percent of their rating. For the free style the time limit is 3.30 and there are no restrictions. If they pass to the second phase they’ll be performing the same routine for a final score.
Remembering last Beijing Games, the Russian team won for the third time in a row both events and in the duets Anastasia Davydova and Anastasia Ermakova who won their second consecutive Olympic title.
